Kestrel A Regency Novella Hannah Meredith 9780989564106 Books Reviews
I wish this had been a full-length novel because I wanted to spend more time with the characters. The story was complete at this length, however, with plenty of conflict and well-rounded characters. I liked that this story was a little different from the normal Regency fare. The writing was sometimes uneven, as can be expected from a debut author, but I’ll buy more books from Hannah Meredith.
It was okay. His betrayal IS unforgivable. Not only was he cheating and might have had a child, but he was an a**h*** to her when she thought he wanted to buy them a townhouse in London when it was really for him and his mistress to live in and he sent that child to his wife before abandoning both for 7 years!!!!! He was rude and inconsiderate. I NEVER would have thought that the guy we are introduced to in the present time was the same guy. The book said he had just reached his majority so he could be either 21 or 25 because it varies from the books I have read. At 21, he was way too young to consider himself in love and was a fool for going for the exotic over the homebody. If he was 25, he was an idiot and was old enough to know better by then. If she is woman enough to forgive him, then good for her. Based on his thoughts, he says that he got himself off at camp by remembering the heroine. That means, to me, he was celibate after the whole mistress fiasco. Not to mention, he probably noticed his error in judgement by then and knew better than to ever cheat again. It was a decent read though.
This is very good story...a second chance for love. It is evenly paced and the characters are believable. It is description without being overly so. I recommend this author and I will seek out more stories by Ms. Meredith.
It appears another talented author has entered the historical romance genre and welcome she is! Nice job! Currently our family has a few teen males who are struggling with who they are, where they are going, and how to get there, very like the H in Kestrel. Add to that the social mores of the British nobility before and during the wars with Napoleon and the basic story line becomes very believable. For good measure, the author explores the question of just what makes a parent. Loved this book! Clever, loving, moving, entertaining. I hope to read many more from HM. 4 stars because it is a novella but very, very well done.
I can't understand all the rave reviews as this is a short story and isn't brilliant.

I guess betrayal is never an easy subject and I really didn't love the H's way of treating the h at the beginning. Fine he had a mistress and his innocent wife was naive but he really was a dog in the way he dealt with her. A little kindness might have endeared him to us but he is awful to the h when she speaks to him about the house in London. He is cruel in telling her his feelings and then what happens with the bastard child is despicable. So my real point is it's really difficult to redeem an H like this in a short story. For me the h was incredibly loving and forgiving and never once made him sweat. I'd have liked a little grovelling on his part.
Love is kind, patient, it is not rude, it is not self -seeking, it is not easily angered. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. A young man on a restricted allowance sees an opportunity through marriage to upgrade his mistress lifestyle thus seeing his wife only as a producer of his heir does not love his wife as he should. His mistress betrays him by marrying another and leaving behind a baby she declares is his that his wife falls in love with and raises for 6 years while he is off at war accepts her husband when he returns and confesses his faults but to protect the child they acknowledge him as their nephew who has become their ward. The widowed husband comes to claim the child as his is denied parentage steals the child but when faced with a life or death situation attempts to save child but dies himself.
This novella begins with a truly funny prologue, in which a besotted, young Lord Trent tries to explain to his beloved mistress that it is to her advantage he’s marrying someone else. Chapter One begins seven years later, when a very changed Lord Trent returns from the War on the Peninsula. The tone of the book also changes, as it should, but there are still humorous sections to balance the poignant relationship that develops between Trent and the wife he had abandoned.
I loved this story. The appealing characters had depth and behaved like real people do. The plot kept me turning the pages. And the language usage was a delight. The love scenes were both hot and emotionally satisfying. This novella is the complete package. I look forward to the novels the author’s website says are forthcoming.
